Obituary for Emily Loke

Emily (Cheresney) Loke, 88, a resident of State College, formerly from Trucksville, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, at Mount Nittany Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

Born April 18, 1929, in Plains Twp., Emily was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Szake) Cheresney. Her husband of 56 years, Michael Loke, preceded her in death on Sept. 19, 2016.

For most of her life, Emily was a homemaker and involved in many activities in the Back Mountain. She was a 4-H and Girl Scout leader, former president of the Dallas Band Parents Association and enjoyed attending many sports and musical events in the Dallas School District. She also worked for many years in the garment industry in the Wyoming Valley.

Emily enjoyed many hobbies, including crafts, sewing, puzzles, penny slot machines and teaching her grandchildren how to make traditional Hungarian foods. She was also a huge fan of Penn State football and the Philadelphia Phillies, almost never missing listening to or watching a game. She was a member of the Bennett Presbyterian Church, Luzerne, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Emily enjoyed traveling and visiting family in many parts of the United States.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her three brothers, George Cherrey, Michael and Joseph Cheresney, and a sister, Mary Margaret Richards.

Emily is survived by her daughters, Lisa Loke Smith and husband, Ray, Tifton, Ga.; and Judy Loke Cerenzia and husband, Michael, State College; her grandchildren, Sally Smith, New Orleans, La.; Josie Smith, Tifton, Ga.; Timothy Smith, Athens, Ga.; and Leah Wooddall, Waycross, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Mount Nittany Medical Center for the excellent and compassionate care they provided during Emily’s brief illness.

If you wish to honor Emily, please feel free to make a donation in her memory to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation or a charity of your choice.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of her family.
Burial arrangements are under the direction of Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Services, State College.
